AI Can Write the Code — So Why Is Coding Still Worth Learning?

It's a fair question, and it's the one we hear most from parents in 2026: if AI tools can already write working code from a plain-language prompt, why should a kid spend hours learning to do it the slow way? The honest answer is that AI changed what coding skill is used for — it didn't make it optional.

The question we hear most this year

A few years ago the pitch for learning to code was mostly about future job prospects. Now, with AI tools that can generate a working script or a simple app almost instantly, some parents reasonably wonder whether that pitch still holds. It's a legitimate question, not a naive one — the landscape genuinely has shifted.

What AI is actually good at

AI tools are genuinely useful for generating code quickly, especially for boilerplate or well-worn problems it's seen a thousand times before. That's real, and it's not going away. But "generates code quickly" and "generates code that's correct, safe, and actually solves the problem you meant to solve" are two different things — and AI blurs that line more than it should, especially for a beginner who has no way to tell the difference.

The skill AI can't replace: judgment

This is the part that doesn't show up in the AI-vs-coding debate often enough. Reading a chunk of AI-generated code and knowing whether it's actually correct, understanding why it works (or doesn't), catching a subtle bug, and knowing when to trust it versus rewrite it from scratch — that's judgment, and it only comes from having built things yourself. A student who's never learned to code independently has no way to evaluate whether the AI-generated answer in front of them is right. They're not using AI as a tool at that point; they're just trusting it, which is a very different and much riskier thing.

From Scratch to ICS3U/ICS4U to CCC

This is exactly why a real coding progression still matters — starting with block-based coding, moving through Java fundamentals and web basics, into Ontario's ICS3U and ICS4U high school computer science courses, and for students who want to go further, competitive programming through the CCC (Canadian Computing Competition). Every stage builds the actual skill of reading, testing, and debugging code — the exact judgment that turns AI from a crutch into a genuinely useful tool. A student who's built that foundation can use AI to move faster. A student who hasn't just ends up dependent on it.

What this looks like beyond a computer science career

None of this requires your child to want to become a professional programmer. Coding builds problem-solving skills, logical thinking, and the habit of breaking a big, confusing problem into smaller, testable pieces — skills that show up in business, healthcare, engineering, and plenty of fields that have nothing to do with software. In an AI-saturated world, the students with an advantage won't be the ones who can prompt an AI the fastest. They'll be the ones who can tell, afterward, whether what it gave them is actually any good.
